Short films are subject to their own narrative economy – yet they often employ the same dramaturgical tools as feature-length films. The seminar Wer ist mein Werk? (engl. Who is my work?) explores epic and dramatic storytelling in short and feature-length films and examines how different narrative styles shape our perception of a story.
Together with Kyra Scheurer, you will explore the role played by the audience’s emotional engagement and how the narrative stance affects our relationship with characters and events. When do we experience a story directly, and when do we observe it from a certain distance? What changes when a film withholds information, offers commentary, employs time jumps or calls the reliability of its narrative into question?
The course will introduce classic models of dramatic storytelling, such as the three-act structure and the hero’s journey, as well as specific variations such as unreliable narration. The focus is less on learning supposedly binding rules and more on the question of what these models achieve – and where their limitations lie. Dramatic storytelling is contrasted with epic narrative styles and stylistic devices: what effect do alienation, interruption, episodic structure, direct address to the audience or a deliberate shift in perspective have? These differences are explored through personal experience and compared with one another. How does a genre change when a film is told in a purely dramatic style or using many epic stylistic devices? What happens to suspense, identification and our view of the characters?
Using selected short films and excerpts from various feature-length films, you will analyse different dramaturgical approaches and examine the structure, focus, and the beginning and end of a narrative. In doing so, you will collectively sharpen your eye for dramaturgical decisions – and for how much the choice of narrative style determines the character of a work.
The seminar is being held in collaboration with the Bennohaus in Münster.
Kyra Scheurer is a film dramaturg, script consultant, systemic coach and film curator. Since completing her degree in Communication Studies, she has been working as a freelance dramaturg, specialising in debut projects, literary adaptations and documentary film. She is also the artistic director of the ‘Edimotion’ montage festival, served on the board of the Association for Film and Television Dramaturgy (VeDRA) for many years, and has taught at numerous institutions, including the Film University Babelsberg, the Master School Drehbuch and the ifs Cologne. She supports a wide variety of projects, particularly in the field of feature films, in story development and post-production, and is committed to diversity-conscious and inclusive storytelling. Kyra Scheurer lives and works in Berlin and Cologne.
