The practice-orientated workshops provide a comprehensive insight into the professional production of documentary films. The focus is on the development of material and projects for authored documentary films with a specific narrative structure and dramaturgy. In the time between the workshop dates, the participants’ documentary film projects are supervised and further developed.
The focus is on:
- Development of participants’ film projects into a project description suitable for submission to film funding organisations and TV editors
- Mediation of the different dramaturgies and
- Basic knowledge on financing, producing, camera work, editing, sound design and distribution strategies
In addition, renowned auteur filmmakers such as Rainer Komers, Brigitte Krause, Pavel Schnabel and Melanie Gärtner teach their film concepts as guest lecturers.
The content of the individual modules:
- Material and project development of the participating projects into a project description (synopsis) suitable for submission to film funding organisations and/or TV editorial offices
- Practice-oriented basic knowledge (workflow including: from research to “pitching”, film funding, calculation of a cinema documentary film project, founding a film production, market analysis of documentary TV formats, casting of protagonists, interview forms in documentary film, the film team & the various fields of work, basics of camera work in documentary film, shooting process, basics of post-production: editing, image and sound processing, distribution concepts)
- Cinematic/dramaturgical concepts of the most important documentary film authors (documentary film analysis and viewing of film examples)
Renowned documentary filmmakers present their cinematic careers as guest speakers. They will talk about their working methods, share their experiences and give an insight into the individual style that characterises their films.

Seminar leader Horst Herz is a filmmaker and producer of mainly feature-length documentaries for cinema and television. His films have been made with funding (Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, Nordmedia, Filmbüro NRW, Saarbrücken and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) and as co-productions with ZDF, NDR, WDR or SWR and have been shown at many festivals (Berlinale, Dok Leipzig, Filmwoche Duisburg, Rotterdam, Max-Ophüls, Kurzfilmwoche Oberhausen etc.).
