The seminar offers documentary filmmakers suggestions for reflecting on and further developing their own practice: What means beyond conventional narrative forms can I use to depict something that cannot be shown or said? How can situations and encounters be sensitively initiated in order to open up space for exchange?
The theme INITIATE OR INSCENE is reflected in the work of lecturer Alina Cyranek. On the one hand, the programme focuses on experiences from her artistic practice. It also provides further examples of application. The seminar examines the question of which methods are helpful in documentary film in order to approach protagonists and topics and translate them into a cinematic form.
In preparation for the seminar, participants should send the following to seminare@filmwerkstatt-muenster.de
- a short CV with filmography. The documents should indicate whether the participants have already been involved in documentary work and to what extent.
- a scene from your own documentary film. The excerpt can be sent in via download link as MP4 or MOV so that the file can be played in the seminar without any problems and discussed in the group.
At the Münster Film Festival, lecturer Alina Cyranek will be showing her documentary FASSADEN, which received the DOK Leipzig Work-in-Progress Prize in 2024 and was awarded the main documentary prize at the Filmkunstfest Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 2025.

Alina Cyranek works as an author, director and producer in Leipzig. In her films, she primarily deals with socio-political issues. In addition to her artistic film projects, she works as a realiser for the MDR short film magazine unicato and arte KURZSCHLUSS. Alina has received numerous awards for her short films, including the Golden Rider at the Bamberg Short Film Festival, the Best Doc Award at the Social Machinery Film Festival in Salerno and the Audience Award BEST IN SHOW at the Chicago Feminist Film Festival.
Alina studied at the TU and completed a double master’s degree in media art at the Bauhaus University Weimar and Tongji University Shanghai as a DAAD scholarship holder specialising in documentary and experimental film. In 2018, she founded hug films GbR in Halle (Saale) with animation artist Falk Schuster.
