In this workshop, participants will discover the Bolex camera and 16 mm film. They will shoot footage and develop the film using laboratory chemicals in the darkroom. In doing so, they will get to know the Bolex and receive an introduction to the camera and how to handle the film.
Aims of the workshop:
- Participants will learn how to load a roll of film and how the camera works.
- Small sets are being set up for the shoot, and filming is taking place outside using a light meter.
- The participants come up with short scenes and act them out.
- Pupils practise handling the chemicals, and the films are developed in the developing tank – reversibly and in black and white.
The finished film will be digitised and then sent to the participants.
The workshop is aimed at filmmakers, artists, performers, musicians and anyone interested in the intersection between film, art and performance. Previous experience is welcome but not essential.
The seminar can also be delivered in English or bilingually in German and English, as required.
Maja Pilati is a filmmaker based in Münster and Barcelona. After completing her Master’s degree in Digital Media at the Milan Academy of Fine Arts, she moved to Spain to work with analogue film at the CraterLab. Maja Pilati worked for many years for the Analogica analogue film festival in Bolzano and has been working as a freelance filmmaker in Barcelona for many years. Since 2024, she has also been working as a lighting technician, mainly in Spain and Germany.
Jana Nestler is an arts educator, cultural practitioner and interdisciplinary artist. She studied at the Kunstakademie Münster, currently works in the education and outreach department of Manifesta 16 Ruhr, and regularly leads workshops on analogue and digital film and interdisciplinary art. These workshops take place at schools, museums and cinemas (or indeed at the Filmwerkstatt Münster) in North Rhine-Westphalia.
