With Anja Kreysing & Maja Milich
Date: Sat, 07.12. – Sun, 08.12.2024
Time: 10.00 – 17.00 hrs
Registration deadline: Sun, 24.11.2024
Target group: Beginners
This workshop explores the many facets of Expanded Cinema – a form of film that goes beyond the screen to include the entire room. The medium of film is reinterpreted and staged as a sensual experience by combining it with other media and art forms. The use of performative elements and interactive installations creates a unique film experience that appeals to all the senses.
Aims of the workshop:
- Participants learn about the concepts and techniques of Expanded Cinema.
- Together they will experiment with the interaction between film, space, sound and performance.
- Own installative and/or performative extensions of the film projects from the workshop will be staged.
- The entire installation will then be presented to the public in the Titanickhalle on Hawerkamp.
Two groups will be formed in the workshop, each working with one of the two lecturers and coming together on the second day to continue working together. One group will work in parallel with Maja Milich on analysing visual techniques and experimenting with projectors such as 16mm and Super8. The lecturer will provide the necessary films and images and support the participants in developing an extended installation. Anja Kreysing , on the other hand, will give participants an introduction to the interaction between sound and space.
We will experiment with arrangements of sounds using analogue tools and objects provided by the teacher. Sounds in the room automatically become a soundtrack in the presence of a film projection and enrich a spatial installation in which film, sound and, if necessary, other objects merge into a new spatial and cinematic experience.
The workshop is aimed at all filmmakers, artists, performers, musicians and anyone interested in the intersection of film, art and performance. Previous knowledge in one of these areas is welcome, but not required.
All seminars of the ANALOG FILM LAB NRW can also be held in English or bilingual in German-English.

Maja Milić is an experimental and conceptual artist, filmmaker, sound researcher and DJ. Her recent practice can be characterised as experimental autoethnography, mainly the deconstruction and reconstruction of found footage/home videos and trivial elements of reality. Apart from her film OTHER (2021-ongoing), such elements appear in her current work with sound improvisation, radiophonic experiments, extended cinema performances, as well as in her conceptual book of the same name OTHER (published by Atlas Projectos, Lisbon, and We make it, Berlin), all cryptically intertwined and in which she believes she is also practising film. Improvisation, intuition and unpredictability are crucial to her approach. Under the pseudonym Geanina Gypt, she presents her sound work in a monthly radio programme Gypt Sessions on reboot.fm. She is a member of the artist-run analogue film labs Klubvizija (Zagreb) and Laborberlin. In the last two years she has been working intensively on her expanded cinema performance “Inscription, Enduring, Potential” at various festivals as well as self-organised and underground venues (International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Blonde Cobra Festival, gr_und Berlin, Pogon Jedinstvo Zagreb, La Générale Paris etc.). She holds an MFA in Artistic Film from HFBK Hamburg and a Diploma in Graphic Technologies from the University of Zagreb.
