Films, conversations, summer nights
With its ‘Kino aufs Land’ project, Filmwerkstatt Münster once again brought film culture to unusual locations in the Münsterland region in the summer of 2025 – places where there are often no longer any permanent cinemas. Between bioenergy parks, farms, outdoor swimming pools and industrial heritage sites, the Münsterland region became a place for special cinema moments and lively film encounters.
On a total of seven evenings, mobile screens, projectors and occasionally even a popcorn machine invited guests to enjoy special cinema experiences. The programme ranged from international arthouse films and poetic short films to works by young filmmakers from the region. Each venue had its own unique atmosphere: In Saerbeck, discussions focused on the energy transition and community, in Steinfurt a farm was transformed into a cinema for guests of all ages with a children’s programme, and at the Lienen outdoor swimming pool, films were even reflected on the water’s surface.
This was followed in September by the ‘Short Film Tour’ with a programme linked to the Münster Film Festival, which opened a few days later. In Greven, Nottuln and Ostbevern, the focus was on regional filmmakers with their perspectives and stories. The subsequent audience discussions made it clear how closely film, everyday life, art and the region can be connected.
Another highlight was the film evening at the Alte Brennerei in Ennigerloh, which took place in cooperation with the Münsterland Festival part 13. Keeping with the festival’s focus on Spain, a varied programme of short films combined Spanish productions with films by regional filmmakers. The programme included works by Romina Küper, Dominic Wittrin, Fran Moreno Blanco and Juanjo Giménez Peña, as well as the documentary film “The Potter” by Florian Ropers, who presented his film in person. The sold-out evening impressively demonstrated how international perspectives and regional film culture can enter into dialogue with one another.
The audience responded enthusiastically: a total of almost 400 guests attended the events. The combination of film, location and personal encounters – cinema as a communal experience – was particularly appreciated.
‘Kino aufs Land’ has thus once again demonstrated that film can also resonate strongly outside the cities. To be continued!?
