Report on the discussion round “Places of the Documentary”

On Sunday, 3 May, the Filmwerkstatt Münster hosted a round table discussion on auteur documentary film and the importance of documentary spaces in North Rhine-Westphalia. The event took place as part of the 45th anniversary of the Filmwerkstatt Münster and took this anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on the history, present and future of documentary film culture.

The guests were Horst Herz, Rainer Komers and Filippa Bauer. Katharina Schröder acted as moderator and led through an open dialogue.

The discussion centred on the “places of the documentary” in NRW: places where ideas are generated, where documentary films are produced, mediated and presented. They discussed the importance of such spaces for documentary work and how they can be preserved, protected and further developed. Workshops, film houses, festivals and independent cultural venues in particular create opportunities for encounters, exchange and artistic development. They not only offer space for practical work on film, but also for discussion, reflection and collaborative processes that are essential for documentary storytelling.

In the course of the event, different perspectives on the author’s documentary film became visible. Among other things, the focus was on the question of how documentary works are created that cannot be completely planned in advance, but grow out of encounters, observations and open processes. The documentary film was understood as a form that thrives on attention, trust and exchange and whose creation is closely linked to time and shared experience.

Questions about production conditions, financing options and current developments within the documentary film scene were also addressed. What spaces do filmmakers need today in order to realise independent documentary works? What role do funding structures, festivals and alternative presentation venues play? And how can places be preserved where documentary positions can remain visible and develop further? Many of the topics addressed had an impact beyond the event and opened up new perspectives on the current situation of documentary film.

This year’s 50th anniversary of the Duisburger Filmwoche, which is present with its programme at various locations – including filmclub münster – also provided a nice connection. This created an additional link to the issues of film cultural spaces, networking and communal places of exchange.

We would like to thank the Kulturamt Münster for their financial support as well as the Duisburger Filmwoche and all those involved for their co-operation and support.
