Giving the country its images

On Sunday, 30 November, the filmclub münster and the Filmbüro NW will be showing GELBE SORTE by Filmwerkstatt member Robert Bramkamp from 1987.

“Giving the country its images”, with this slogan, the Filmbüro NW set out around 45 years ago to turn NRW into a film region. Together with the Filmbüro NW, the filmclub münster is showing a film in its place of origin – the Münsterland.

The first full-length feature film by Robert Bramkamp from 1987: young farmer Bernd has problems with his father’s farm. They are on the verge of bankruptcy. A friend has the saving idea: “The non-production of surpluses must not be recognisably different from the production of requirements”. Of course, this has something to do with the dark abysses of the EC – aiming for zero production.

In Rotterdam, Bernd meets a Dutch cold store owner who runs an imaginary, but real, paid final depot for meat. From then on, the pigs supplied by Bernd only exist on paper. In between, there are repeated images of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Are there parallels with life in the countryside? Not only agriculture, but also women are changing. Bernd’s girlfriend wants to go to drama school. She declaims from Kleist’s “Penthesilea”, which, as we know, is about the power struggle between women and men.

“…each sequence was memorable for its density and coherence in terms of human relationships and atmosphere. There was a lot of originality, humour, an obvious love of the Münsterland and a well-founded hatred of tax and subsidy policies that create monocultures, senselessly destroy agricultural surpluses and can turn work ethic into criminal energy.” FR

Moderation: Kim Münster from Filmbüro NW
