Film screening People Gustavo – Colour is my life.

The film by Filmwerkstatt-member Peter Csaba can be seen at CUBA, Achtermannstraße, on 24 January.

Peter Csaba’s film sheds light on the life and work of the Spanish artist Gustavo (*1939 in Cartagena, Spain), who is known in Germany as an important representative of contemporary Spanish art, not least because of his many years of work in Berlin.

Gustavo, whose full name is “Gustavo Peñalver Vico”, now lives and works on his country estate near Capdepera on Mallorca. His work is characterised by the colourful and whimsical figures depicted in humorous and absurd as well as serious scenes on canvases, tiles, other materials or in sculptures. His unmistakable style has earned him international recognition.

The façade of Gustavo Haus in Berlin is an enduring symbol of his creative energy. To this day, it remains an impressive work of art for residents and visitors alike and emphasises the extent to which Gustavo brings his art into the public sphere.
As an artist with a strong European influence, Gustavo is one of the most important creators of our time.

His works reflect the wanderings and experiences he had while travelling through Europe as an artist. With a deep understanding of the continent’s cultural heritage and a style all of his own, he has secured himself a place in art history as a European “through and through”.

The film documents the creation of a new painting and provides rare insights into Gustavo’s creative work. It also provides a deep insight into his thoughts and actions and shows how his art was influenced by the different European cities and cultures.
