At the beginning of February, filmclub münster presented a very special film plea: with the screening of RETURN TO DUST by Li Ruijun at the Cinema, Daniel Huhn bid farewell as Managing Director of Filmwerkstatt Münster. In the cinema hall, his successors Steffi Köhler and Anna Schlottbohm expressed their heartfelt thanks to him for his work and commitment over the past few years on behalf of the Filmwerkstatt Münster and all filmclub partners.
In 2020, Daniel took over the management from Winfried Bettmer. Together with Steffi Koehler as his deputy, he led Filmwerkstatt Münster through the challenging coronavirus period – a phase full of uncertainty, but also important developments. As Managing Director, Daniel tangibly contributed his passion for film and literature, especially at the Litfilms festival, where he provided new impetus. Together with Steffi Koehler, he focussed on production: they intensified their work on co-productions and the promotion of up-and-coming filmmakers in Münster. Projects such as Kino aufs Land, Jugend kuratiert and Human/Nature bear witness to the sustainability of their approach. Filmwerkstatt employees and members will never forget experiences from this time, such as a visit to the MIMIK cinema in Deventer or the internal film evenings organised by the federal volunteers.
In the area of screening, Daniel thought film culture beyond the cinema – for example as curator of the Flurstücke festival. On the board of the NRW Film Culture Network, he worked to strengthen the cinema as a space for discourse and encounters. Daniel also left his mark on filmclub münster’s anniversary year 2023. As a historian with a special interest in the past, he wrote a fascinating book about the club’s history together with Carsten Happe under the title “Andere Blicke”. For the 75th anniversary of the oldest still existing film club in Germany, he brought film enthusiasts and representatives of other film clubs to Münster to make the film club fit for the future. Daniel’s desire for content and artistic work was always palpable. His decision to leave the management of the Filmwerkstatt and devote himself to his own film projects is therefore a logical one – and one that we fully understand.
As the Filmwerkstatt Münster team, we would like to thank you for your commitment and energy as well as your authentic nature and the thoughtfulness with which you approached new projects and gave the Filmwerkstatt Münster valuable impetus. We look forward to our paths continuing to cross – be it as a Filmwerkstatt member, as a freelancer or in other exciting roles. We wish you all the best for your upcoming projects!
