Cinema premiere of “Preußen und Westfalen 2”

On Wednesday, 30 August 2023, the premiere of the historical series “Prussia and Westphalia 2” will take place at Cinema & Kurbelkiste at 6 pm. Admission is free.

“Preußen und Westfalen 2” tells the story of the end of the German Empire in the province of Westphalia and takes place between shortly before the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 and shortly after the end of the war in the winter of 1918.

The story centres on two women, Marie and Käthe, who meet at four different times in a village in Tecklenburger Land. Their personal stories bring the social upheavals of their time in Westphalia to life.

Historical series about the women’s movement during the First World War

How did women’s self-image change during the First World War? What roles do they have to play on the “home front”? What rights do they fight for? This is what the four episodes of the series “Prussia and Westphalia 2” are about: the two young women Käthe and Marie experience the enthusiasm and suffering of war as well as the social upheaval and upswing of the women’s rights movement – from the outbreak of war in 1914 to the end of the war. The relationship between the two is initially characterised by contrasts. Käthe is Catholic and comes from the poorer rural population. In contrast, the middle-class Marie is Protestant and is one of the first female students. Their worlds continue to converge. But there seems to be more between them than just friendship…

The supporting programme of the event includes a thematic and historical introduction as well as an audience discussion with the filmmakers.

“Preußen und Westfalen 2” follows on from the 2018 series of the same name, but tells its own self-contained story. The historical series was produced by Juli Film (Lejla Aliev and Filmwerkstatt board member Jan Enste) for the Preußen in Westphalia network in co-production with the LWL Media Centre for Westphalia and the LWL Prussia Museum Minden.
