Against the backdrop of Russia’s inhumane war against Ukraine, the organisers of the Russian Film Days have decided to change the previously successful project and refocus it on the Eastern European successor states of the Soviet Union.
In November, the Ukrainian anti-war film Klondike and the Yakut film Nuuccha about the colonisation of the Yakuts will be screened at the Schloßtheater as a prelude to the new event format “CINEMA OST – Osteuropa im Spiegel des Films”, accompanied by a panel discussion at the LWL Museum of Art and Culture.

Russia’s neo-imperial war aims to destroy Ukraine, its state sovereignty and its culture. Against this background, strengthening Ukrainian national identity and breaking free from the dominance of Russian culture is vital for survival. The panel will discuss what Russian cultural imperialism means in the area of Ukrainian film culture, but also for the forcibly assimilated ethnic groups in the Russian Federation, and how the process of decolonisation is progressing.

KLONDIKE

Director Maryna Er Gorbach takes a very personal view of the war in Ukraine from the tense field between distant reality and the intense density of an anti-war film. Pregnant Irka and her husband Tolik live in a village in Donetsk, in the midst of the war on the Ukrainian-Russian border. Although their lives are increasingly affected, Irka refuses to leave her home.

Daniil and his family fled from Ukraine to Germany in 2022 in search of a new future. The short film gives an insight into the family’s daily life and Daniil’s friendship with Leon, a boy of Russian origin.

NUUCCHA

Yakutia in the late 19th century: Habji and his wife Keremes have just buried their second child and are preparing for a harsh winter. Instead of helping them, the local prince orders them to take in the Russian convict Kostya. At first they all try to find a common language, but Kostya soon decides that from now on he will be master of the house… NUUCCHA offers viewers a unique perspective on a dark chapter of Siberian history.
