New Film Generation: Poetry in Motion – Films on Vimeo

As part of the NEW FILM GENERATION, an analogue film workshop with children took place during the summer holidays. This resulted in three short films, which can now be found online on Vimeo.

The NEW FILM GENERATION of the Filmwerkstatt Münster serves as a rehearsal room for young film talents. In a creative and supportive environment, children and young people have the opportunity to experiment with film and text without pressure and to realise their first artistic film projects together. In the Kulturrucksack workshop led by Maja Pilati and Jana Nestler, eight children aged between 10 and 14 explored poems and captured images with Super 8 cameras during the 2024 summer holidays.

Creativity and poetry: an insight into our poetry film workshop

In our poetry film workshop, the children and young people started with a creative writing exercise, “minute writing”, in which they were inspired by the titles of poems. During this process, the children discovered what images emerged in their minds when they read a poem. These ideas were then captured in a collective storyboard, which formed the basis for their subsequent films.

The participants then learnt how to use Super 8 cameras and shot their own films in groups. Each of them directed a scene, while the others either acted or provided technical support. The atmosphere was consistently creative and dynamic, which was reflected in the young people’s ideas.

A particular highlight was the trip to the harbour, where the participants went in search of motifs with a list of inspiring words. They captured their impressions in short film sequences and also recorded sounds of the city to enrich their films with authentic sounds.

The week culminated in the film development and screening of their works. The young people mixed the Kaffenol bio-developer themselves and developed their films independently. After drying, they watched their results in the analogue Super 8 projector.

The premiere finally took place on 29.9.2024 at Litfilms in the Schloßtheater Münster. There, the young filmmakers proudly presented their works on the screen and answered questions from the audience, bringing this creative adventure to a successful conclusion.

“Massive tunnelling drill”
The poem “Massive Tunnel Drill” by Hinemoana Baker was read to the children and young people. They then creatively translated it into pictures and filmed their interpretation with a Super 8 camera.

“5 poetry films”
In pairs, the children and young people selected various poems, interpreted them in their own way and transformed them into visual art. Using a Super 8 camera, they expressed their interpretation of the poems in filmic images.
