The jazz film series “LOOK & LISTEN” will resume on 5 April at 6 pm with the premiere of two jazz documentaries.

Farmer 4

A documentary film by Winfried Bettmer & Hermann Peseckas, Germany 2023, 70 min.
with Conny, Johannes and Matthias Bauer, Louis Rastig and others.
Production Filmwerkstatt Münster & Hermann Peseckas

A film about the irrepressible desire to make music, the fascination of improvisation and four generations of German-German music history.

A documentary film about the three Berlin free jazz and improvisation musicians Conrad and Johannes Bauer (both trombone) and Matthias Bauer (double bass), who have been among the masterminds of this musical genre worldwide for decades. In 2006, they founded the improvisation ensemble Bauer 4, whose fourth member is Conrad’s son, the young pianist Louis Rastig.

The musicians and brothers Conny, Hannes and Matthias Bauer, who come from the GDR, have a long-standing connection to Münster:

Trombonist Johannes Bauer’s first concert in “West Germany” took place in Münster. He played together with Willi Kellers from Münster at the invitation of the Initiative Improvisierte Musik Münster. He was also later part of Willi Kellers’ formations (e.g. at the Münster Jazz Festival in the Preußenstadion in 1985). His older brother Conny, who also plays the trombone, is still a regular guest in the Black Box with changing formations. With the East German trombone quartet “Four Bones”, Conny and Johannes Bauer were also guests at the SKULPTUPROJEKT 1996 at the Landesmuseum.

In addition to various guest appearances in the BLACK BOX, bassist Matthias Bauer has already made two guest appearances at the KlangZeit Festival in Münster. In 2002 with the composer and pioneer of electronic music Georg Katzer and in 2006 with the main interpreter and muse of Giacinto Scelsi, Michiko Hiriama. She performed the “Canti del Capricorno” dedicated to her together with Matthias Bauer at the Musikhochschule as part of the festival.

Last Days in Moers

A documentary film by Edmund Bolger, Germany 2022, 20 min.
with Matt Mottel, Kevin Shea, Jan Klare, Carl Ludwig Hübsch

Matt Mottel and Kevin Shea, two free jazz artists from New York, were guests in Moers on the Lower Rhine for a year in 2021. There, the official “improvisers in residence” lived together in a house on the market square, honed their art, collaborated with many musicians from the region and integrated themselves into the Moers community… well, as best they could during the pandemic…

LAST DAYS IN MOERS accompanies the duo as they plan one last big farewell concert to say thank you to their host city. One last time they have to bring their psychedelic-inspired free improvisations to the people – and where better to do that than at the Christmas market?

Inspired by the music of Mottel and Shea, this short documentary explores the spirit of improvisation, weaving new textures and structures out of chaos, the mundane, chance and repetition.

Carl Ludwig Hübsch (tuba) and Jan Klare (saxophone) are also involved in the final concert.

The filmmakers will be present for the film discussion.
