16 SEPT. 2025 Kino aufs Land: GREVEN

Cinema returns to Greven at the Ballenlanger on 16 September 2025.

Kino aufs Land (engl. Cinema in the countryside) – next stop: Greven!

Cinema returns to Greven! For decades, there hasn’t been a screen here, but on September 16th, the bale warehouse will become the stage for a special film program. As part of Kino aufs Land (“Cinema in the Countryside”), the Filmwerkstatt Münster will tour the region with screens, projectors, and hand-picked films – bringing the great diversity of cinema to people beyond the metropolises.

A few days before the start of the Filmfestival Münster, a hand-picked selection of short films from the festival program will be shown. The program covers a wide range of topics, both thematically and formally: from poetic miniatures to dark comedies, from socially relevant material to imaginative narratives. Some examples:

The focus of the films is on works by filmmakers from the region. This makes the evening an encounter with artistic voices that are rooted here in Münsterland, but have long since also made an impact in the larger cinematic context.

Die Bücherhüter” (“The Bookkeepers”) by Christian Hümbs-Steinbeck is a documentary journey through the fascinating world of antiquarians. In atmospheric images, he tells of the love of books and the value of stories in a time when so much seems digital and fleeting.

Quite different, however, is “Das ist keine Figur, das ist Verrat” (That’s not a character, that’s betrayal) by Romina Küper, in which hairdresser Melanie accompanies her son Stefan, a young author, to the first reading of his autobiographical debut novel “Der Salon”. A mother and her son, separated by the shame of their origins, which actually unites them.

Dominik Wittrin’s “How to Kill Your Family” provides a bitingly humorous counterpoint, a biting comedy that delightfully deconstructs the family idyll. Other works, including “Nelly’s Story” by Jonas Steinacker and the documentary portrait “The Moment I Closed You to My Heart” by Mustafa Khalafs, add depth and complexity to the evening.

Between films, we’ll not only take a look at the upcoming film festival with festival director Carsten Happe, but also look back at the history of cinema in Greven, where Happe grew up. There will also be an opportunity to talk to filmmakers present. Because Kino aufs Land (“Cinema in the Countryside”) doesn’t just mean watching films—it also means engaging in conversation about stories, images, and the issues that matter to us.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m., program starts at 8:00 p.m.

Admission is €5. Tickets are available online in advance at localTicketing and on-site at Greven Marketing (Alte Münsterstraße 23, 48268 Greven), as well as at the box office.

The Kino aufs Land (“Cinema in the Countryside”) project is funded by the RKP – Regional Culture Program NRW of the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia and the LWL Cultural Foundation.
